Steps
How to Play the Lying Game Challenge
-
Select a household object and decide if you want to lie or be truthful. Find a small, random item in your house that can be easily hidden behind a barrier. For instance, grab something simple like a comb, scissors, pen, shoe, bottled drink, or candle. Then, decide if you want to tell the truth about the object you chose, or lie to your partner and claim to have a different object.
- If you decide to lie, choose something that sounds like other objects to better bluff through your partner’s interrogation. For instance, a paperclip can sound similar to a bobby pin or needle, while a jar of jelly can sound similar to a jar of salsa or a candle.
-
Sit at a table and create a barrier between you and your partner. Choose a table where you and your partner can sit side-by-side, like at a dining room table or counter. Then, build a barrier between you so you can’t see each other’s objects on the table. For instance, stack boxes, board games, or pillows on top of each other, or use a large book.
- If you want to film the challenge and post it on TikTok, make sure you have space on the table to prop up your phone!
- If you’re in a pinch, you can play the game on the ground! Just sit against a wall and create a barrier between you and your partner.
-
Set your objects on the table and tell each other what they are. For instance, say “I have a book” or “I have a bag of ground coffee.” If you decided to lie, tell your partner there’s a different object on the table, rather than the one that’s actually in front of you. If you decided to tell the truth, tell your partner which object is actually on the table in front of you.
- Remember, your partner may decide to lie or tell the truth about what’s in front of them. So, don’t immediately believe what they say!
-
Ask your partner to touch, tap, or use their object. Ask your partner to do a physical action with the object so you can hear if it really sounds like the item they claim it is. For instance, if your partner says they have a book, ask them to flip through the pages. Or, if they say they have a baseball, ask them to bounce it on the table. Listen carefully and analyze how quickly it took your partner to complete the action.[2]
- If the sound doesn’t line up with the object they say they have, or they took a long time to “answer” your question, your partner may be lying!
- Remember, the goal of the game is to suss out whether your partner can actually fool you! Listen to everything they say, the tone of their voice, and any laughter to help determine if they’re lying.
-
Convincingly perform the action your partner asks you to do. When it's your partner’s turn to ask you a question, make sure your object sounds like it’s supposed to. If you’re telling the truth, this is easy…but if you’re lying, make sure your bluffing game is strong! Tap, roll, open, press, or use the object in a convincing way so your partner doesn’t suspect that you’re lying about what it really is.[3]
- For instance, if you said you have a book but you really have a folder, you might wave it back and forth to sound like pages or tap the hard edge against the table to sound like you dropped the book.
- If you’re telling the truth, you can try to make yourself sound guilty or mess up the sounds of the object to confuse your partner so they lose!
-
Take turns asking questions until you’re confident they’re lying or truthful. Keep going back and forth and asking each other to do physical actions with your objects. There’s no time limit or a certain number of questions you have to ask, so simply keep going until you both feel confident about whether you’re lying or telling the truth.[4]
- Most TikTok videos show the couple going back and forth 5 to 6 times. However, the questioning part of the game can go on as long as you’d like.
-
State whether you think your partner is lying, then reveal your objects. Take turns making your final guesses, and simply state “I think you’re lying” or “I think you’re telling the truth.” Then, remove the barrier to see how you both did!
- The fun of the game is seeing if you were able to fool each other, or if you can read each other really well and easily determine when you’re lying or telling the truth.
- Whoever guesses correctly wins, and whoever guesses incorrectly loses.
- While there’s no set prize, you can decide to create one if you’d like!
