Even though Powerball drawings are completely randomized, some numbers pop up more often than others. This doesn’t necessarily mean they’re more likely to appear again in the future, but learning more about the statistics behind Powerball numbers can be a fun way to help you decide what to play. We’re breaking down the most (and least) common Powerball numbers, combinations that tend to appear together, and cold numbers that haven’t appeared for a while.

What are Powerball’s most common numbers?

  • Most common main (white ball) numbers: 61, 21, 23, 32, and 33.
  • Most common Powerball (red ball) numbers: 4, 21, 18, 24, and 14.
  • Least common main numbers: 13, 49, 26, 46, 34, and 31.
  • Least common Powerball numbers: 16, 23, 17, 15, 7, and 12.

  1. If you’re trying to decide which numbers to pick for your Powerball ticket, these pairs might be a good idea. They’ve hit together more frequently than any other combination. The most common Powerball pairs are:[3]
    • 61 and 69: Drawn together 15 times
    • 21 and 32: Drawn together 15 times
    • 51 and 61: Drawn together 14 times
    • 37 and 44: Drawn together 14 times
    • 30 and 62: Drawn together 13 times
    • 23 and 32: Drawn together 13 times
  2. Consecutive numbers don’t appear quite as often as the pairs above, but these sets still pop up more often than you might think. The most common consecutive number pairs include:[4]
    • 66 and 67: Drawn together 11 times
    • 1 and 2: Drawn together 11 times
    • 61 and 62: Drawn together 10 times

    • 6, 35, and 36: Drawn together 4 times
    • 2, 12, and 65: Drawn together 4 times
    • 7, 15, and 36: Drawn together 4 times

  1. If you believe 13 is an unlucky number, you might be right when it comes to Powerball—it’s been drawn less than any other number. Here’s the list of the white Powerball numbers that are drawn least often:[6]
    • 13: Drawn 69 times
    • 49: Drawn 74 times
    • 26: Drawn 74 times
    • 46: Drawn 76 times
    • 34: Drawn 79 times
    • 51: Drawn 79 times
  2. There’s no good reason why these numbers should hit less often—it’s just random. Still, if you’re trying to find a number that has a history of winning big, you might skip these least-common Powerball numbers:[7]
    • 16: Drawn 38 times
    • 23: Drawn 41 times
    • 17: Drawn 41 times
    • 15: Drawn 4 times
    • 7: Drawn 42 times
    • 12: Drawn 42 times
    • Fun fact: The only set of consecutive triplets that has been pulled more than once is 1, 2, and 3![8]

Strategies for Picking Your Powerball Numbers

PDF download Download Article
  1. These tips may help you decide which numbers to pick. We’re not saying that using these strategies will improve your chances of winning—the odds are pretty low, no matter what. But if you’re having trouble deciding which numbers to play, here are a few things to keep in mind:
    • Mix hot and cold numbers. Maybe a number is on a hot run and it will pop up again, or this might be the day a cold number breaks its streak. Pick a mix of numbers and see what happens.
    • Think beyond your birthday. A lot of people use their birthdays as inspiration for Powerball drawings, but that means they’re not using common Powerball numbers like 32, 33, 61, and 69. If you hit on numbers like that, you might not have to share the jackpot with as many people.[10]
    • Consider a Quick Pick. Some people like Quick Picks (where the numbers are automatically generated) because they’re fast and convenient, while others prefer to pick their numbers. So who’s more likely to win? Actually, it works out about the same—about 70% of all Powerball tickets are Quick Picks, and so are about 70% of winning tickets.

Final Thoughts: Can Statistics Improve Your Chance of Winning?

PDF download Download Article
  1. This is just for fun and probably won’t improve your chances of winning. Each Powerball drawing is randomized and entirely independent, meaning it's not impacted in any way by previous drawings. The odds that any single number will be drawn—hot or cold—are exactly the same as they are for every other number. And if you play Powerball, your odds of winning are the same as everyone else’s—about 1 in 292 million.[11]
    • Some numbers do show up a little more often, but it's more of an anomaly than a pattern. It's the nature of randomized drawings that some numbers will appear more often and some less, although the differences will likely even out as more drawings are added to the pool.
